Asylum Attorneys
At the law firm of Robert Brown LLC, our immigration lawyers advise clients about the availability of asylum as an approach to resolving removal problems or avoiding return to the country of origin upon the expiration of a temporary visa. Asylum is available for individuals who are present in the U.S. either lawfully or unlawfully. The main issue is whether the applicant is unable to return to his or her own country on the basis or either past persecution or a well-founded fear of prosecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.
Contact us in Cleveland, Raleigh or Orlando to discuss your situation with an experienced immigration lawyer. While the issues raised in asylum applications can be complicated and challenging, our experience with asylum has helped many clients over the years.
Applying for asylum
Every applicant for asylum must complete form I-589, Application for Asylum. The initial application for asylum can be complicated by issues such as your current immigration status, whether you are in removal proceedings, or whether you have previously had an asylum application denied. In many cases, you will need to apply for asylum within one year of entering the U.S., but there are many exceptions to this requirement. Our attorneys will help you complete the application.
The asylum interview
We also will help you prepare for the asylum interview, which occurs after you have been fingerprinted and not more than 43 days after the filing date on your application. If you live a long distance from one of the eight asylum offices, the timetable may be adjusted to allow the asylum officer time to travel to a location closer to you. We will attend the interview with you, as the law allows.
