Academic Student Nonimmigrant Visas to the U.S.
Students who wish to commence or continue academic studies in the United States must obtain F-1 visas in order to attend school in the United States. F-1 visas are temporary, nonimmigrant visas that provide students from other countries the opportunity to study in the U.S. Before obtaining an F-1 visa, however, prospective students must meet specific criteria on the visa application.
The Student Exchange and Visitors Program (SEVP) must approve the school before a prospective student applies for admittance under an F-1 visa. Learn more by talking with one of our attorneys at Robert Brown LLC.
Requirements for an F-1 Student Visa
Once an approved institution admits a student, the student can apply for an F-1 visa. In order for the government to issue a visa, the student must meet the following requirements:
- The approved institution must admit the student in a full time academic program or a language training program.
- The student needs to be proficient in English or enroll in English proficiency courses.
- The student has to have sufficient funds available to be self-supporting during the entire length of the course of study.
- The student must maintain a residence in his or her home country.
