Thanks to the United State’s system of family-based immigration, someone who marries a U.S. citizen is able to gain permanent residency within a relatively short waiting period (shorter than most residency applications). But this does not happen automatically upon being married – those seeking residency must still submit an application and follow certain deadlines and filing requirements.
